CAIRS is a storage and retrieval package for creating and using local databases. It offers a great deal of flexibility in database design, indexing options, security and output options. It is a mature system that appears to be virtually impervious to user error. CAIRS is not an easy package to learn, even when configured with access menus. However, for regular, experienced users, the strengths of the package will repay the effort to learn to use it.

Bakup provides users with convenient, flexible and relatively fast procedures for backing up disk files. It also has automatic record‐keeping. This package performs well and makes hard disk back‐up easy to manage. Its price is at the high end for this type of software, but it compares well with other packages in this price range.

Textbank is a full‐text retrieval package that makes use of the structure inherent in most text files. It offers powerful, rapid searching capabilities and is very easy to use. Results of searches can be sorted, stored, printed, temporarily hidden or permanently deleted. Existing machine‐readable text can be converted into a Textbank database by letting the package do automatic indexing. Organisations that have large procedure manuals, litigation support files and other text collections will find Textbank an excellent vehicle for providing access to their information.

Mist+ is an integrated software package that combines telecommunications, text processing and database management with a programming language that enables the user to tailor the system for a range of applications. The result is a relatively powerful and flexible yet easy‐to‐use package for applications developers. The package is so well integrated and logically consistent that it begins to make sense after using it only a short time.

InfoMapper provides a framework, complete with forms and reports, for gathering and organizing an inventory of an organization's information resources. InfoMapper Release 1.2 is for use with IBM/PCs, ATs, and compatible computers with at least 640 kb of memory (1 or 2 Mb preferred) and a hard disk with at least 3 Mb available. The Clipper database programming package can be used with dBase III files and indexes. The main advantage of Clipper is that it compiles programs which would be handled by an interpreter if done with dBase III.
